Guidelines for Drinking Alcohol Safely
This is where you find out the stats about drinking alcohol safely. Many of us like a drink, some of us get drunk regularly, but how much is considered a safe limit for our bodies?
You’ve most likely seen information on units and ml of ethanol in drinks which weren’t necessarily that simple to understand.
I’ve put the recommended amounts here in normal language, as in glasses, shots and pints lingo. Better than getting out your calculator right?
Men's recommended weekly amounts
Recommended weekly amount is 21 units which is approximately:
Beer drinkers
A pint is 562ml. For metric measurements, a 500ml glass is also referred to as a pint.
So the recommended weekly amount is:
- 9 pints of normal strength beer at 4-5% alcohol
- 10,5 pints for weaker beers at 3 or 4%
- 7-8 pints of stronger beer at around 6%
If you only drink halves, double the above figures.
Wine drinkers
If drinking with a normal 125ml glass of wine, these are the recommended limits per week:
- 14 glasses per week of 12% content wine
For fortified wine, life port or sherry:
Using a 50ml measure as a basis.
- 21 measures per week at 20% content
Spirits drinkers
On the basis of a small 25ml shot of vodka, gin, whisky, tequila, rum, the recommended weekly amounts are maximum:
- 21 measures of a single shot of spirits
- 10,5 measures of doubles
Seems pretty easy to go over these limits! I’d better chill on the drinking myself actually.
Also, this doesn’t mean you if you go and drink 9 pints in one night once a week it’s all hunky dory! Guidelines for daily drinking limits are recommended too. Read on..
